In Praise of Rose, A Bulldog

It’s fair to say that Rose’s face

Is lacking in aesthetic grace; 

Her bulging eyes are rimmed with pink,

The folds that frame her flat nose sink

Like brackets round her drooling snout

Where yellow, canine teeth jut out

This fierce visage dates from the day

Her ancestors kept bears at bay

And wrestled bulls to bended knee

Enthralling base humanity.

A patient dog, she’s now the sage

Of a more enlightened age.

Gentle Rose seems not to mind

The child who smacks her stout behind

With innocent, adoring might;

She does not curl her lip to bite

The fingertips that pull her ears

But lovingly licks rueful tears 

That fall upon my reprimand

To have a more considerate hand.
